Green And Strasburg Earn Weekly Conference Baseball Awards
Date: 3/31/2008
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State senior Garett Green has been named Mountain West Conference Co-Player of the Week while Aztec right-hander Stephen Strasburg earned MWC Pitcher of the Week accolades. The Aztec second baseman shared the award with Brian Cavazos-Galvez of New Mexico.

Green, from Anaheim Hills, Calif., batted .500 (10-for-20) from the plate, with one home run, one double, five runs scored and four RBI, as the Aztecs went 5-0 in non-conference action last week, including a three-game sweep of Houston. In SDSU's 6-3 win over then-No. 23 UCLA, Green had an RBI single and hit his fourth homer of the season to give the Aztecs the lead for good in the seventh inning as part of a 2-for-4 outing at the plate. Against Harvard, he went 2-for-4 while also scoring a run in a 4-0 Aztec win.

In the series opener vs. the Cougars, Green went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. In game two, he singled in the tying run in the bottom of the ninth, then scored the winning run in the 7-6 SDSU win. In the series finale, he went 2-for-4, including an RBI single that capped a four-run fifth inning, giving SDSU the lead for good in a 9-6 victory. Defensively, Green had 11 putouts, 10 assists and one error.

Strasburg, a San Diego, Calif., native, allowed just two hits, walking one batter and striking out 12 in his 8.0 innings on the mound to record a shutout victory in the first game of a three-game series vs. Houston. The sophomore righty held the Cougars, who entered the week receiving votes in the national polls, to a .080 team batting average (2-for-25) for the game. The Cougars came into the contest with .318 team average.

Strasburg retired 12 of the first 14 batters that came to the plate, and faced the minimum nine batters over his final three innings of work. After allowing the leadoff batter to reach base in the fifth and sixth innings, he pitched out of both jams to maintain the shutout. In his final inning on the mound, he struck out the side.

No Disney
Date: 3/8/2008
Written by Twisters Staff - In a recent article written in the Register Citizen it was reported that the Walt Disney Co. would be sponsoring a Hannah Montana talent search. This is not true. Members of the NECBL have been working with Radio Disney about putting together some sort of talent show, that may include other clubs from the NECBL. There was talk of bringing the winners of these events to perform at the All- Star Game. There was also talk that the winner could possibly win a trip to Disney, paid for by a sponsor, not Disney. Walt Disney Co. is not involved at all. All of the events reported in the Register Citizen were discussed and not confirmed.
The register also stated “no word has been mentioned of Hannah Montana actress Miley Cyrus making an appearance in the city.” One thing should be clear. Hannah is not coming to Torrington.
The red carpet event at the Warner will feature the movie “Beautiful Son” produced by Don King the award winning cinematographer.

Former Twisters Strasburg, Green on Preseason Wallace Award Watch List
Date: 2/15/2008
LUBBOCK, Texas - San Diego State sophomore pitcher Stephen Strasburg and senior second baseman Garett Green have been named to the 2008 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award Watch list. The initial list contains a total of 224 nominees with the Aztec twosome among the five players representing the Mountain West Conference.

Strasburg returns to SDSU for his second season after being named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2007. He finished the season with a record of 1-3, seven saves and a 2.43 earned run average as the Aztecs' closer. He struck out 47 and walked only 15 over 37 innings and was named the MWC co-Freshman of the Year.

This past summer, Strasburg pitched for the Torrington Twisters in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, compiling a mark of 1-0 with eight saves and a 1.29 ERA. He was a first-team all-NECBL selection and was named the league's top reliever. He was invited to join Team USA for its five-game series against Chinese Taipei in late June, making two appearances resulting in one save and a 1.80 earned run average.

Green, who joined the Aztecs in 2007 from Cypress Junior College, is SDSU's top returning hitter after batting .324 with 12 doubles and 35 RBI last spring. He led the Aztecs with 14 multiple-hit games and finished the season with an eight-game hitting streak during which he batted .484. In league play, Green hit .384 with five doubles and 13 RBI.

The Wallace Award is presented to the nation's top collegiate baseball player in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame's annual induction festivities. The 2008 award banquet will be held Thursday, July 3, in the United Spirit Arena on the campus of Texas Tech University.

Dedicated to the memory of former Texas Tech shortstop and assistant coach, Wallace was a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977 to 1980. A four-year starter, he was named All-Southwest Conference and All-District Six his senior year when he led the Red Raiders to their first-ever appearance in the Southwest Conference Tournament. After playing two years in the Texas Rangers organization, he returned to Texas Tech and served as a graduate assistant and later as an assistant coach. In the summer of 1984 he was diagnosed with cancer and fought the disease courageously until his death on March 24, 1985, at age 27.
The selection committee for the Wallace Award is comprised of a national panel of preeminent coaches, sports information directors, former winners and beat media who most closely follow the sport. The list of players will expand and contract during the regular season and additional Wallace Watch candidates may be added as the season progresses.
